Ethereum Developer Opens EIP to Share ‘Bricking’ Ethash ASIC Miners

However, the Chinese company, that is rumored to have raked in a $4 billion profit last year, has gradually grown ASICs even for algorithms that are less-widely utilized.

Bitmain and other manufacturers have constructed ASICs for a variety of mining algorithms — including the SHA-256 algorithm utilized by Bitcoin — but other cryptocurrencies have tried to use PoW algorithms that are ASIC-resistant.
EIP 958, published on GitHub from Ethereum core programmer Piper Merriam, formally proposes that improved ASIC resistance be implemented into the community’s case of Ethash, a Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus algorithm.



An Ethereum programmer has opened an Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) to talk about if the community must change its Ethash mining algorithm to maintain ASIC resistance.
Since the ASIC market is dominated by Bitmain, lots of men and women are afraid that the development of Ethash ASIC miners will centralize Ethereum’s hashpower and give Bitmain outsized effect — sway it might not match for the benefit of the community.
A casual survey conducted by Ethereum programmer Vlad Zamfir implied that the vast majority of the 6,903 respondents could hypothetically encourage a branch to maintain ASIC resistance, while just 13 percent voiced explicit disapproval of this thought.
As their name implies, ASICs are built to reach a particular purpose, which enables them to maximize efficiency for one application rather than general-purpose usage like CPUs and also the more powerful GPUs.

“I think it is the accepted wisdom that ASIC established mining leads to gains [in] centralization when in comparison to GPU mining,” Merriam wrote.

These fears are not isolated into the Ethereum community. Monero, for example, has dedicated to modifying its case of the Cryptonight mining algorithm each six weeks to ensure it is unprofitable to make an Monero ASIC miner.

The EIP is an immediate response to reports that Bitmain — undoubtedly the largest producer of mining channels that use Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) chips — has recently produced an Ethash ASIC miner and will start sending them within the upcoming few weeks.
